UTI or Urinary Tract Infection is an infection that occurs in the functioning areas of the human body’s urinary system, which includes kidneys, bladder, ureters, and urethra. Most of these infections impact the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra.

Women have greater chances of developing UTI in comparison to men. Bladder infections are usually annoying, painful, and severe infections in kidneys can develop serious consequences.

Usually, doctors keep patients on antibiotics for the treatment of UTIs and always suggest their patients take some precautions for not catching the infection again.

Symptoms of having UTI:

  • Passing frequent, but small amount of urine
  • Strong urge to urinate
  • Cloudy in appearance
  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Light red or cola-coloured urine (Sign of blood in urine)
  • Strong-smelling Urine
  • Pelvic pain in the centre of the pelvis and around the public bone area

Types of Urinary Tract Infections:

There are multiple types of Urinary Tract Infections with different signs and symptoms. It depends on which part of the urinary tract is infected.

Bladder UTI Sign & Symptoms

  • Pelvic Pressure
  • Lower abdomen discomfort
  • Blood in Urine
  • Pain while urinating

Kidney

  • Pain in the upper back and side flank
  • Shaking & Chills
  • High Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Urethra (Urethritis)

  • Burning sensation while urinating
  • Discharge

Causes of Urinary Tract Infections

These infections typically occur when a bacteria enters the urinary tract through the urethra and starts multiplying itself in the bladder. Our urinary system is designed to keep all these infections at bay, but sometimes, the defence system fails and our urinary tract is attacked by these bacteria. Most of the urinary infections go away with drinking a lot of water, but a few types of infections need antibiotic support to vanish.

Complications

Women have the chance of grabbing the UTI more than once in their lifetime. Well-treated infections may not lead to severe damage, but UTIs that are left untreated, some serious consequences can be faced like kidney damage or complete renal failure.

Here are some of the complications varying from acute to severe:

  • Urethral narrowing (stricture) in men from multiple time infections
  • Irritating behaviour
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Permanent kidney damage
  • Sepsis, potentially a life-threatening complication when it spread to the kidneys
